THE PROJECT
This project was part of my BA studies. The submission counted towards my course grade.
The brief was to create an experimental font style and showcase it in a booklet. I had complete creative freedom for the font type design and its intended use.
My inspiration came from the urban environment. I combined torn industrial elements with organic shapes and constructed each character individually to create something new.
The characters contain repetitive base shapes with individual elements, which can’t be found twice, and make them therefor unique. The output is a futuristic and coarse design making each character stand out as its own artwork. The font name "St. Bau" suppose to echo its content as it is a play on words for "Saint" (or holy) and "Building" in German.
The font type is mainly of decorative intent and meant to be added in a supportive digital and print capacity. I aimed at creating an unusual typography, where every characters' uniqueness allows it to be used as a single design component. A singular character, a word or one sentence max could support a product or an idea providing the viewer with an almost dystopian urban atmosphere or used as a contrast to positive imagery to communicate the intended message.
